Women Empowerment through Blood Donation
The students and staff members of Kamla Nehru College for Women, Phagwara were apprised about the benefits of blood donation during a special assembly held on Wednesday to inform them about the Mega Blood Donation Camp to be held on 19 January at Gupta Palace. This camp is being organized by Hindustan Welfare Blood Donor Club in association with Mahila Shakti Sangathan (an organization made under the aegis of SDM Jyoti Bala). Retd. SMO Dr. Baldev Raj, President of Hindustan Welfare Blood Donor Club Mr. Vitin Puri and Secretary of Hindustan Welfare Blood Donor Club Mr. Vikram were the guests present on the occasion. College Principal Dr. Kiran Walia welcomed the guests. The event was organized by Women Cell of the college. Mr. Puri said that this camp is being dedicated to National Youth Day and he appealed to the students of the college to participate wholeheartedly in this event. He also added that in India only 5 to 6 per cent of women participate in voluntary blood donation and said that any person whose HP is more than 11 gram and has no medical illness or has undergone major surgery is fit for donation. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Baldev Raj shared that the yearly demand of blood is around 12 million of which 10.9 million is met through voluntary donation. He further added that every person has around 5 to 6 litres of blood in his body out of which only 350 ml of blood is taken during donation. He also added that this amount is recovered by the body within 24 hours. Dr. Baldev Raj also added that any person in the age group of 18 to 60 years is fit for donation and blood donation reduces 33 per cent risk of heart diseases and 88 per cent risk of stroke if a person donates blood every three months.
